Arcadia University History

Two centuries ago, little else traveled through the wilderness of westernmost Pennsylvania except for the Ohio and the Beaver Rivers. At their confluence, the French established a trading post. Here members of the Delaware, the Shawnee and the Iroquois tribes would gather to barter and exchange goods with the European traders.

The rivers were essential for travel, for sustenance and for military defense. During the American Revolutionary War, General McIntosh of Washington's Colonial Army built a fort at this place where the Beaver River flowed into the Ohio.

But as the war ended, time passed, and the population expanded, McIntosh's fort became a town: Beaver, Pa. The land was bountiful, but the citizens still hungered for knowledge. In 1853, an intellectual outpost was born - a school to teach such liberal arts as ancient history, rhetoric, logic, analogy.

This school on the Beaver and Ohio Rivers attained collegiate status in 1872 and was named Beaver College. Nonetheless, times change, towns change, even colleges change. In 1925 Beaver College moved east to Jenkintown, Pa., where it attracted more students.

This location afforded larger facilities, a more adequate campus and greater opportunities for development. The change resulted in such an increase in enrollment that the Board of Trustees found it desirable to impose limitations on the annual enrollment in order to maintain the advantages of a small college.

It soon became apparent that additional property would be needed to provide for the expansion of the College. In the autumn of 1928, the Trustees were fortunate in securing a nearby estate located in Glenside, Pa., and known as Grey Towers. With its spacious grounds and stone buildings, it provides a campus of great dignity and beauty. The College operated both the Jenkintown and Glenside campuses into the mid-1960s, when it consolidated all activities onto the Grey Towers property, in Glenside, a suburb of metropolitan Philadelphia.

Originally under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Arcadia University now maintains an historic relationship with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), but is independently controlled and ecumenical in spirit.

In the summer of the year 2000, the Board of Trustees approved a historic decision to change the name and status of the school to Arcadia University.

In the past 30 years, Arcadia University has grown significantly from a small undergraduate, liberal arts college serving a traditional-age student body, to a comprehensive university serving more than 3,700 men and women, ages 17 to 77, through part-time and full-time, daytime, and evening, undergraduate and graduate programs. The University also operates one of the largest study abroad programs in the U.S., serving another 3,000 students each year.

How long will it take me to earn my degree?

At the University of the Rockies, you can finish your Master's degree in about 18-20 months or your Doctorate degree in just more than three years.

Classes run continuously, rather than in semesters. Typically, you take one course at a time and move on to the next course without a break. Opportunities to enroll and begin a course sequence in an online degree program are available frequently.

How do University of the Rockies' online classes work?

As an online student with University of the Rockies, your online classes take place in Blackboard, the University's online platform. Blackboard is an asynchronous environment, meaning that you can log in at any time at your convenience. You will communicate with your instructor and fellow students, read some assigned texts, post your assignments and comment on other students' assignments all through the Blackboard environment.

How many times do I need to log in to my online class?

Log in at least two separate times each week to meet University of the Rockies' minimum attendance requirement for each online class.

Do I have to log in at a specific time?

No, you get to choose when and where to log in, which allows you to fit your degree program into your busy schedule. Your online classroom takes place in an asynchronous environment, which means that all students are free to participate at their own pace, so long as they log in at least 2 times per week, and on separate days.

What is the history of University of the Rockies?

University of the Rockies (UoR) was founded June 18, 1998 as the Colorado School of Professional Psychology (COSPP), to provide a professional graduate education in psychology to individuals who seek licensure as psychologists or practice in other arenas of the profession.

When COSPP was purchased by Bridgepoint Education in September, 2007, the name was changed to University of the Rockies. The School of Professional Psychology is now a School of University of the Rockies along with the School of Organizational Leadership.

Where is the University located?

Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) Consortium colleges and universities are dedicated to helping servicemembers and their families get college degrees. Military students can take courses in their off-duty hours at or near military installations in the United States, overseas, and on Navy ships.

SOC was created in 1972 to provide educational opportunities to servicemembers, who, because they frequently moved from place to place, had trouble completing college degrees. About Gonzaga University

Gonzaga University started in 1881 with $936 in hard silver dollars. It bought Gonzaga’s founder, Father Joseph Cataldo, S.J., 320 acres of land and water, what people then referred to as “the old piece of gravel near the falls.” Six years later, the Gonzaga College officially opened the doors of its only building for “young Scholastics, whose ambition it is to become priests.” Exclusively for boys, the College was under the charge of the Jesuit priests. Enrollment for the 1887-88 academic year was 18 boys and young men.

Today, it is known as Gonzaga University, a private, four-year institution of higher education. More than 105 buildings dot the 131-acre campus overlooking the Spokane River. Students include both women and men, who can enroll in a multitude of undergraduate or graduate programs. Enrollment for the 2007-08 academic year was 6,923 students.

A constant throughout the years is Gonzaga’s educational philosophy, based on the centuries-old Ignatian model of educating the whole person – mind, body and spirit. Professional Certification Opportunities

Clayton College programs provide graduates with the eligibility to seek certification or other professional credentials from a number of national organizations.

The American Naturopathic Certification Board offers two recognized designations after the successful completion of board examinations:

  • CTN®: Graduates of the MS in natural health program are eligible to become board certified as traditional naturopaths.

  • CNW®: Graduates of the MS in holistic nutrition program are eligible to become board certified in nutritional wellness.

The National Association of Nutrition Professionals (NANP) has approved graduates of the CCNH master of science in holistic nutrition program for eligibility to apply for a national board credential and to become registered with the organization. Once credentialed, the professional is allowed to use the designation, “Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition.”

The International Organization of Nutritional Consultants has approved the CCNH master of science in holistic nutrition. Graduates qualify to become members of the IONC. Active members are allowed to use the RNCP (Registered Nutritional Consulting Practitioner) designation.

Because the International Iridology Practitioners Association (IIPA) has approved the Clayton College iridology program, graduates of the CCNH program (who are current members of IIPA) are immediately eligible to take the IIPA certification examination. Walden University History

1970 Walden is founded by two New York teachers, Bernie and Rita Turner, who sought a way for adults in the workforce to pursue doctoral degrees and develop into leaders committed to the betterment of society. Harold “Bud” Hodgkinson, a faculty member at the University of California, Berkeley, publishes “Walden U.: A Working Paper” in the journal Soundings. The article critiqued the higher education system and initiated the concept of a university that was truly student-centered.

1971 The first Walden office opens in Naples, Florida, and the first Summer Session residency is held at the Cove Inn there. Most students are education administrators who have completed doctoral work but not their dissertations.

1972 Walden confers 46 Ph.D.s and 24 Ed.D.s at its first commencement, in Naples, Florida.

1977 Walden implements a formal curriculum called the Guided Independent Study Program, focused on “social change agentry.” The first university-based Summer Session is held at the University of Rhode Island.

1979 The Minnesota Higher Education Coordinating Board approves Walden’s request for licensure. Walden is allowed to grant Ph.D.s and Ed.D.s in Minnesota.

1982 Walden’s academic offices move from Naples, Florida, to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to begin seeking accreditation in a region that is open to nontraditional post-baccalaureate education.

1984 The curriculum is restructured to emphasize how professions are affected by social change.

1986 With accreditation through the North Central Association in mind, Walden introduces the Knowledge Area Module (KAM). With the KAM, students demonstrate competency by completing an individualized program of study within a curriculum.

1988 Central Michigan University president Dr. Harold Abel becomes the second president of Walden University.

1990 Walden is accredited through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

1991 Walden partners with Indiana University to provide access to its research library and campus during Walden’s Summer Session. Walden is accepted as a member of the Council of Graduate Schools, and Glen Drake becomes the third president. Enrollment: 550.

1992 Bernie and Rita Turner sell Walden to Don Ackerman, a Florida businessman, who assumes the position of chair of the Board of Directors.

1994 Walden brings email and listserv applications to its students. Lt. Gen. Dave Palmer, former superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, becomes the fourth president.

1996 Sociologist Amitai Etzioni receives the university’s first honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. Walden begins offering National Public Service Fellowships to doctoral students. Enrollment: 1,000.

1997 Walden introduces the Web-based Ph.D. program in Professional Psychology. The first cyberspace chapter of the education society Phi Delta Kappa (PDK) is formed at Walden. Adult learning theorist Malcolm Knowles receives an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.

1998 The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools reaccredits Walden for seven years. The vice president for academic affairs and former dean of the graduate school at the University of Rhode Island, J. Kent Morrison, becomes the fifth president. Jim Dixon, former president of Antioch University, receives an honorary degree.

1999 In its review of online schools, Fast Company magazine gives its only A grade to Walden.

2000 Walden becomes the first distance-learning university to be categorized “research intensive” by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Walden’s first dean, Harold “Bud” Hodgkinson, and Frank Dilley, a longtime faculty and board member, receive honorary doctorates.

2001 Sylvan Learning Systems, Inc., purchases 41 percent of Walden University. U.S. News & World Report calls Walden “well regarded” and lists it among the “Best of the Online Grad Programs.” Enrollment: 2,000.

2002 Former president of the U.S. Army War College Robert Scales Jr. becomes the sixth president. Sylvan Learning Systems acquires a controlling interest in Walden. Four schools encompassing all Walden degree programs are formed: School of Management, School of Health and Human Services, School of Psychology, and School of Education.

2003 Paula Peinovich, Walden’s vice president for academic affairs and former vice president for academic affairs at Excelsior College, becomes the seventh university president. Former Minneapolis mayor Sharon Sayles Belton receives an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. Walden offers its first bachelor’s completion program, a Ph.D. in Public Health, and a Master of Public Health. Enrollment: 8,000.

2004 Walden celebrates the 150th anniversary of the publication of Walden by honoring The Thoreau Society. Sylvan Learning Systems, Inc., changes its name to Laureate Education, Inc., and acquires the remaining interest in Walden University as part of its new focus on higher education worldwide. Enrollment reaches 13,000 students in 17 degree programs. More than 6,000 degrees have been conferred since 1970.

2005 Walden celebrates 35 years of Inquiry for Social Change. National Technological University, the nation’s largest online engineering master’s degree university, merges with Walden, creating the NTU School of Engineering and Applied Science.

2006 Walden is reaccredited by the North Central Association, and its M.S. program in Nursing is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Accreditation.

2007 Jonathan A. Kaplan named the eighth president of Walden University, after five years of strong leadership within the organization. Commencement keynotes are given by Rear Adm. Carol A. Romano, chief professional officer for the nurse category in the U.S. Public Health Service (winter), and the founders of the micro-lending nonprofit Kiva (summer). Walden hosts a residency in Chile.
