Mountain State University Online

Mountain State University Online

Mountain State University offers online courses and degrees via the Blackboard CE and WebCT CE 4 learning management systems. Both programs feature tools that allow students to access course information, communicate with their instructors and other students, take exams, and submit assignments.

Distance learning is education delivered to locations away from the classroom. Distance learning can supplement or replace traditional classroom education through the use of instructional television, computer or Web-based training, and numerous other technologies. Distance learning makes professional development accessible to students who work during traditional classroom hours. Through flexible learning schedules, students can learn at their own pace and at a time and place that is convenient for them. Distance education also makes learning accessible to the disabled and others who are not able or cannot afford to come to a traditional college campus for their education.

Mountain State University History

Mountain State University was founded as Beckley College in 1933. Located in the heart of southern West Virginia, the private, not-for-profit institution began as a junior college in response to the community's desire to provide accessible higher education to its youth. At a time when fewer than 10 percent of high school graduates nationally were attending college, Beckley College opened with 97 students and classrooms rented from a local church.

During its first half century, the college experienced slow but steady increases in enrollment, staff, facilities, and programs. In 1990, five presidents and 57 years later, President Charles H. Polk took on the challenges of leading Beckley College into a new era.

The past two decades have been a time of tremendous change, including the transition from a two-year to a four-year college, then to a master's level institution and, in 2009, to the doctoral level. The campus has grown and degree programs have expanded to include high-demand professional and technology fields as well as the humanities, arts, and sciences. The name Mountain State University was adopted in August 2001.

In addition to traditional classroom-based studies, MSU now serves thousands of students across the country and around the world with a system of branch campuses as well as distance learning, nontraditional credit options, and collaboration with a variety of industry and education partners. Today, as throughout its history, Mountain State University remains committed to its founding vision of fostering opportunities for personal and professional success.

ACCREDITATION/CERTIFICATION INFORMATION DISCLOSURE

Accreditation is a voluntary process which may be undertaken by schools to demonstrate compliance with specific standards designed to indicate a level of education quality. SBC is institutionally accredited (accredited in total) by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS), a national accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Education (DOE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). This indicates that SBC substantially meets or exceeds the stated criteria of education quality established by ACICS, and approved by the DOE and CHEA. This recognition of institutional accreditation by ACICS entitles SBC to offer Title IV Financial Assistance to students who qualify.

An additional form of accreditation that a school may undertake to obtain is a specific, individual accreditation of certain programs (programmatic accreditation). Institutional accreditation is not the same as or a substitution for programmatic accreditation. Although programmatic accreditation is not required for employment in many cases, the existence of programmatic accreditation is a further indication that a program meets the standards of the profession, and may therefore indirectly enhance employment opportunities. Also, in some cases, programmatic accreditation will allow the graduates of the accredited program to sit for some credentialing exams immediately upon graduation without any requirement of work experience.

About Rochester Institute of Technology

Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is a nationally respected leader in professional and career-oriented education. Talented, ambitious, and creative students of all cultures and backgrounds—and from 50 states and more than 95 countries—have chosen to attend RIT.

Few universities provide RIT’s depth and breadth of career-oriented studies. Rochester Institute of Technology’s eight colleges offer more than 90 different bachelor’s degree programs in art and design, business, engineering, science and mathematics, criminal justice, photography, environmental studies, hospitality and service management, computer science, information technology, bioinformatics, and many other areas.

As a major technical university, RIT offers academic opportunities that extend far beyond science and technology, including more liberal arts courses and faculty than you will find at most liberal arts colleges. With a strong foundation in the humanities and social sciences, you’ll gain an understanding of both technological developments and the philosophy and ethical issues that go with them.

The hallmark of an RIT education is the cooperative education program. Rochester Institute of Technology is one of the first universities in the world to begin cooperative education back in 1912. Last year, more than 3,600 co-op students alternated periods of study on campus with paid employment at more than 1,900 firms across the U.S. and overseas. Today, experiential education includes much more than just co-op, it involves internships, study abroad, and research, and is designed to enhance your academics with exciting opportunities and experiences.

Penn Foster Career School History

In 1890, a newspaperman named Thomas J. Foster was the first to recognize that working adults with ambition needed a more convenient way to learn advanced skills. He developed the distance-learning method as a way of helping anthracite coal miners become mine superintendents and foremen.

This was the solution hard-working people around the country had been searching for! Miners would work a twelve-hour shift, then return home to study by candlelight, so they could gain the engineering knowledge they needed to earn promotions.

The school became a stunning success virtually overnight, enrolling more than a quarter of a million students in its first decade. As the years rolled by, millions more would choose Penn Foster Career School. By 1945, 5,000,000 students had enrolled in Penn Foster training programs, and as of today that number has grown to more than 13,000,000.

As the world's leader in at-home education, Penn Foster Incorporated has maintained a tradition of excellence for more than 100 years. They're proud of their history and excited about their future.
