Virginia College Online

Virginia College History

Virginia College was founded by the Atlantis Group, Inc., in 1983 and then purchased by Career Futures, Inc., in 1989. Virginia College opened its first branch campus in Birmingham, Alabama, in February 1992, and this became the main campus in 1995. In April 1993, the College opened its second branch campus in Huntsville, Alabama. In 1997, Virginia College received senior college recognition from the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools(ACICS) which now accredits all programs at the school's campuses.

Education Corporation of America acquired Virginia College in mid 1999. The College opened its third branch campus in Jackson, Mississippi, in January 2000. Medical Career Centers in Pensacola, Florida, and Mobile, Alabama, became part of the Virginia College family in July 2001. A fourth branch campus was opened in Austin, Texas, in January 2002. Subsequent additions are Virginia College in Biloxi, Mississippi, which held its first classes in November 2005, Virginia College School of Business and Health in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which opened in October 2006, Virginia College in Montgomery, Alabama, which opened in April 2008, and Virginia College in Greenville, South Carolina, which offered its first class in October 2008. Virginia College in Jacksonville, Florida, which opened in April 2009. The most recent additions are the Augusta, Georgia campus, which is scheduled to open in June 2009, and the Charleston, South Carolina campus, which is scheduled to open in October 2009.

About Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology

Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology was founded September 27, 1928, by W.G. Skelly, President of Skelly Oil Company. He established Spartan Aircraft Company and formed the corporation that built Tulsa Municipal Airport (now called Tulsa International Airport). Since 1928, this airport has been the home of Spartan. Mr. Skelly was convinced that air transportation would come of age and bring with it a need for skilled aircraft technicians and pilots; therefore, Spartan offered both mechanic and flight courses and quickly became a leader in aviation education.

Spartan's fame spread quickly, first nationally and then internationally. Students came from many states and foreign countries.

During World War II and the Korean War, Spartan trained thousands of pilots and mechanics for the armed forces while continuing to expand in the civil aviation field. Much of the credit for this period of expansion goes to J. Paul Getty, who acquired Spartan from Skelly in 1942.

The ownership of Spartan was maintained by Getty until 1968, when it was purchased by Automation Industries, Inc. Spartan built and occupied its south campus on Pine Street in 1969. In 1971, Spartan became a subsidiary of National Education Corporation. National Education Corporation became a subsidiary of Harcourt General Corporation in 1997.

Spartan has graduated more than 80,000 technicians and pilots. Through the performance of its graduates, it has had a significant influence on world aviation.

What Programs does Spartan offer?

A. Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology offers Avionics Maintenance Technology, Aviation Maintenance Technology, Nondestructive Testing diploma programs, Associate of Applied Science Avionics Maintenance Technology, Aviation Maintenance Technology, Quality Control and Professional Pilot degree programs. Spartan also offers a Bachelor of Science Aviation Management degree program.

What kind of facilities do you have?

A. Spartan has over 240,000 square feet of training facilities on three campuses and located at two Tulsa-area airports.

Do you assist graduates in job placement?

A. Spartan offers ongoing career services to their graduates. Career services include: resume creating, on-campus recruiting visits, and interview skills training. The Career Center also holds two on-campus career fairs each year.

When should I apply for acceptance?

A. Applications for acceptance are reviewed and processed weekly. Once a student determines interest in applying for acceptance they should apply immediately. Applicants must complete an interview process with an Admissions Representative prior to submitting application to the college. Final acceptance is determined by the Admissions Department after reviewing submitted application and all supporting documentation.

Does Spartan offer any scholarships?

A. Thousands of scholarship dollars go unused each year simply because no one applies. Spartan and other aviation and non-aviation related organizations offer scholarships to assist students in attending college. Do you offer housing assistance?

A. The Spartan Landing Housing complex. Located just behind Spartan's Main Campus, The Spartan Landing offers comfortable and affordable housing for their single students. Spartan can also recommend a free apartment referral service to assist students in locating suitable housing when the Spartan Landing is at full capacity. The referral service is for flight students, single students age 21 and older and married students, or for students attending college with family.

About Career Technical Institute CTI

Who is eligible to attend Career Technical Institute (CTI)?

Career Technical Institute is open to all secondary school students residing in Dutchess County. Individual programs may have particular requirements.

Their mandate, as provided by the commissioner’s regulations and education law, is to provide career and technical education programs for all qualified students. Every effort is made to evaluate each student individually on his or her own merits. The selection process is a joint cooperative effort between the local school counselor and CTI administrative staff. Together they work toward providing placement for each individual student in the appropriate school program. The Dutchess BOCES does not discriminate on the basis of gender, color, race, religion or disability.

How do I enroll in a CTI program?

If you are a high school student who wants to enroll in CTI, you should obtain an application from your home school guidance department. The application is to be filled out completely including a second course selection and signed by a parent or guardian and the school nurse. The completed application should then be returned to your home school guidance counselor. Your guidance counselor will attach a copy of your high school transcript and forward the complete application packet to CTI.

If you change your mind before school begins, please contact CTI during the summer. If you want a program change after you are at the Center, see a CTI administrator.

Will CTI help me meet my graduation requirements?

At CTI successful students may earn three (3) to four (4) units each year toward a Regent’s or Local High School Diploma. Credits earned may be used to fulfill sequence or elective credit requirements.

At CTI, students may complete diploma sequences in Arts and Humanities, Business Information Systems, Health Services, Engineering Technologies, Human and Public Services, or Natural & Agricultural Sciences.

CTI programs meet diploma requirements. Students may begin their Career and Technical Education sequences in their home school or at CTI. Generally students attend CTI during their junior and senior year of high school.

Do I have to pay to attend CTI?

Tuition for courses at CTI is paid for by the student’s home school. There is no tuition cost to the student or his family for the instructional services or transportation. However, purchase of individual equipment, work clothes and materials may be required within the framework of any CTI offering. These purchases are the property of the student.Adults attending CTI must pay tuition in advance. Please call 845.486.8001 for current charges for adults.

Can I get high school credit for working while I attend CTI?

Yes. CTI offers a number of work based learning opportunities. Cooperative work experience acts as the bridge between formal career and technical education and the world of work. Whenever feasible, dependent upon types of programs, work experience will play an important role in the occupational preparation of the student. In the majority of instances this work experience will be during the second year of a two year program. Students will "capstone" on a part-time basis and will receive evaluations from their employers. Students will report to class at least once a week for related theory and class work.

Will CTI help me find a job?

Yes. CTI has a full-time Placement Specialist. This person is responsible for developing a Job Bank with potential employers and providing job orders received from employers to our teachers. The teachers notify qualified students of these opportunities and assist them in obtaining full-time jobs upon graduation. Students looking for part-time employment may also use the services of the Job Placement Coordinator.

Does CTI offer academic courses?

The requirements for a diploma now include at least three units of math and science. Students may take courses in these areas at CTI. Home school guidance departments will assist students in determining the need for academic courses. Academic course offerings include: English 11; Social Studies 12; MST (Math, Science & Technology); Integrated or Specialized Math or Science; and CTE Integrated English.

Do I graduate from my home school or CTI?

Students graduate from their home school. However, CTI has a Recognition Night where all students who successfully complete an occupational program and acquire the skills and knowledge to enter the world of work receive a CTI Certificate of Completion. This certificate, which indicates the program length and the job targets attained, is recognized by local businesses as they screen and hire new employees.

What type of success do CTI students have after program completion?

Career and technical graduates have, typically, been very successful. They are small business owners, managers and supervisors; they are nurses, journeymen carpenters, plumbers and electricians, machinists, electronic technicians, licensed cosmetologists, auto and auto body mechanics, cooks and chefs, etc. They are in all the fields in which training is provided. The Placement Specialist and all the teachers have the responsibility to assist all successful program completers in getting jobs in the fields in which they are trained. Typically, over 94% of the graduates are working or continuing their training beyond high school.

Will I be able to use my CTI experience for college opportunities?

In recent years, approximately 65% of our program completers have gone on to a post secondary educational setting. Their graduates have attended the following schools of higher education, many with advanced standing or credits already earned at CTI.

Dutchess BOCES was organized on May 22, 1957, upon the order of the Commissioner of Education. Through the cooperative efforts of their thirteen component school districts, Dutchess BOCES is able to offer a wide variety of educational programs and support services to children and adults in Dutchess County. Walden University History

1970 Walden is founded by two New York teachers, Bernie and Rita Turner, who sought a way for adults in the workforce to pursue doctoral degrees and develop into leaders committed to the betterment of society. Harold “Bud” Hodgkinson, a faculty member at the University of California, Berkeley, publishes “Walden U.: A Working Paper” in the journal Soundings. The article critiqued the higher education system and initiated the concept of a university that was truly student-centered.

1971 The first Walden office opens in Naples, Florida, and the first Summer Session residency is held at the Cove Inn there. Most students are education administrators who have completed doctoral work but not their dissertations.

1972 Walden confers 46 Ph.D.s and 24 Ed.D.s at its first commencement, in Naples, Florida.

1977 Walden implements a formal curriculum called the Guided Independent Study Program, focused on “social change agentry.” The first university-based Summer Session is held at the University of Rhode Island.

1979 The Minnesota Higher Education Coordinating Board approves Walden’s request for licensure. Walden is allowed to grant Ph.D.s and Ed.D.s in Minnesota.

1982 Walden’s academic offices move from Naples, Florida, to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to begin seeking accreditation in a region that is open to nontraditional post-baccalaureate education.

1984 The curriculum is restructured to emphasize how professions are affected by social change.

1986 With accreditation through the North Central Association in mind, Walden introduces the Knowledge Area Module (KAM). With the KAM, students demonstrate competency by completing an individualized program of study within a curriculum.

1988 Central Michigan University president Dr. Harold Abel becomes the second president of Walden University.

1990 Walden is accredited through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

1991 Walden partners with Indiana University to provide access to its research library and campus during Walden’s Summer Session. Walden is accepted as a member of the Council of Graduate Schools, and Glen Drake becomes the third president. Enrollment: 550.

1992 Bernie and Rita Turner sell Walden to Don Ackerman, a Florida businessman, who assumes the position of chair of the Board of Directors.

1994 Walden brings email and listserv applications to its students. Lt. Gen. Dave Palmer, former superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, becomes the fourth president.

1996 Sociologist Amitai Etzioni receives the university’s first honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. Walden begins offering National Public Service Fellowships to doctoral students. Enrollment: 1,000.

1997 Walden introduces the Web-based Ph.D. program in Professional Psychology. The first cyberspace chapter of the education society Phi Delta Kappa (PDK) is formed at Walden. Adult learning theorist Malcolm Knowles receives an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.

1998 The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools reaccredits Walden for seven years. The vice president for academic affairs and former dean of the graduate school at the University of Rhode Island, J. Kent Morrison, becomes the fifth president. Jim Dixon, former president of Antioch University, receives an honorary degree.

1999 In its review of online schools, Fast Company magazine gives its only A grade to Walden.

2000 Walden becomes the first distance-learning university to be categorized “research intensive” by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Walden’s first dean, Harold “Bud” Hodgkinson, and Frank Dilley, a longtime faculty and board member, receive honorary doctorates.

2001 Sylvan Learning Systems, Inc., purchases 41 percent of Walden University. Walden introduces a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Public Administration, plus a Ph.D. program in Public Policy and Administration. U.S. News & World Report calls Walden “well regarded” and lists it among the “Best of the Online Grad Programs.” Enrollment: 2,000.

2002 Former president of the U.S. Army War College Robert Scales Jr. becomes the sixth president. Sylvan Learning Systems acquires a controlling interest in Walden. Four schools encompassing all Walden degree programs are formed: School of Management, School of Health and Human Services, School of Psychology, and School of Education.

2003 Paula Peinovich, Walden’s vice president for academic affairs and former vice president for academic affairs at Excelsior College, becomes the seventh university president. Former Minneapolis mayor Sharon Sayles Belton receives an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. Walden offers its first bachelor’s completion program, a Ph.D. in Public Health, and a Master of Public Health. Enrollment: 8,000.

2004 Walden celebrates the 150th anniversary of the publication of Walden by honoring The Thoreau Society. Sylvan Learning Systems, Inc., changes its name to Laureate Education, Inc., and acquires the remaining interest in Walden University as part of its new focus on higher education worldwide. Enrollment reaches 13,000 students in 17 degree programs. More than 6,000 degrees have been conferred since 1970.

2005 Walden celebrates 35 years of Inquiry for Social Change. National Technological University, the nation’s largest online engineering master’s degree university, merges with Walden, creating the NTU School of Engineering and Applied Science.

2006 Walden is reaccredited by the North Central Association, and its M.S. program in Nursing is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Accreditation.

2007 Jonathan A. Kaplan named the eighth president of Walden University, after five years of strong leadership within the organization. Commencement keynotes are given by Rear Adm. Carol A. Romano, chief professional officer for the nurse category in the U.S. Public Health Service (winter), and the founders of the micro-lending nonprofit Kiva (summer). Walden hosts a residency in Chile. Walden sponsors a new online, peer-reviewed journal, the Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences. Enrollment: More than 28,000, with more than 25,000 alumni.

2008 The College of Education renamed The Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership in honor of the former U.S. Secretary of Education. Walden launches full bachelor’s programs in business administration, child development, and psychology. Walden sponsors the Presidential Youth Debate with John McCain and Barack Obama.

Walden University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association, www.ncahlc.org; 1-312-263-0456.

The Higher Learning Commission is one of six regional accrediting bodies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. When evaluating credentials, employers and universities often look for applicants who earned their degree from an accredited university.

Kaplan University History

As one of the world’s leading providers of lifelong education with operations around the globe, Kaplan University has evolved well beyond their historic roots in test preparation and now serve students of all ages through a wide array of offerings. These include programs for kids and schools, post-secondary education, professional training, and more.

Kaplan University, formerly Kaplan College, Quest College, and American Institute of Commerce (AIC), was founded in 1937. AIC was purchased by Quest Education Corporation in November 1998 and in April 2000 changed its name to Quest College. Quest Education Corporation was purchased in July 2000 by Kaplan, Inc.

In November 2000, the name of the College was changed to Kaplan College. In 2004, Kaplan College expanded its academic offerings to include master’s-level programs and became Kaplan University. Kaplan Higher Education Corporation and Kaplan, Inc. are dedicated to continuing the same excellent education for which AIC has always been known.

Accreditation

Kaplan University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA).

Kaplan Higher Education includes more than 70 campuses in the U.S. and abroad, as well as online programs through Kaplan University and Concord Law School. Kaplan University offers career-oriented master's, bachelor's, and associate's degrees as well as certificates and diplomas.

Through Kaplan Higher Education, students gain the skills necessary to qualify for employment in a variety of fields, including criminal justice, health care, business, education, financial planning, information technology, legal studies, fashion, and design. Each of the individual schools in the division is separately accredited by one of several national or regional accrediting agencies approved by the U.S. Department of Education. Kaplan also operates Dublin Business School, Ireland's largest independent third-level institution, and runs a partnership with Nottingham Trent University in the United Kingdom that provides courses to international students seeking admission to programs at the University.

Kaplan University suggests and encourages its students to independently research the licensing requirements in any state where they intend to seek licensure.
